beach testing 8-21-2009

We are headed to the beach for a day of testing this friday (8/21/2009). We will be meeting up at the shop around 11am, and plan to be at Dockweiler State beach around 12pm. See previous posts for directions.

On the testing agenda is:

  • drive with delay and bandwidth limitations
  • drive with auto-cut algorithm
  • driving with realistic obstacles
  • store video/sensor data for later post processing
  • continue to train backup drivers

Good luck! How has your delay been with “no delay”? For our system, with all the webcam picture taking, storing, sending over wifi, drawing in the GUI, etc, there is a delay naturally.

It is not much, but it adds up. Because we are still building our robot for this year, we have been driving around a little platform with the robot computer, webcams, and delay. It isn’t fun, but it isn’t impossible. Takes some real getting used to though. I think your robot moves slowly enough that it shouldn’t be too much of an issue, because you can never get into too much trouble if you are driving slowly.

How fast are you geared to drive (theoretically no load) right now?

Our natural delay with no competition delay is pretty minimal. I measured it by having the camera take a picture of a fast running clock and the camera image. it’s on the order of 250ms when running at 5fps. we recently switched to 30fps, i should measure it and see if its any different.
